Have you ever noticed how often you say, “I should…”?
Sometimes those words come and go without us giving them a second thought. Other times, they quietly shape our choices before we even realize what’s happening.
Recently, I caught myself thinking I should be wearing different clothes for a bike ride. I paused and asked myself a simple question:
Whose should is this?
The answer surprised me.
It wasn’t really mine.
That moment reminded me how easily we can begin living inside expectations we never consciously chose. Those expectations may come from family, culture, school, religion, past experiences, or simply watching how everyone else does something.
None of those influences are inherently wrong. They often serve a purpose. But over time, they can become so familiar that we mistake them for our own truth.
When that happens, we slowly begin living inside someone else’s version of who we should be instead of discovering who we already are.
One of the simplest practices I’ve found is to notice whenever the word should appears in my thoughts.
Rather than judging myself, I simply ask:
Is this truly mine?
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes the answer is no.
That one moment of awareness creates space to choose rather than react.
Living authentically isn’t about rejecting everything you’ve been taught. It’s about gently uncovering what genuinely aligns with your own heart and allowing that truth to guide your life.
You have something no one else can offer this world.
The more you honor what is authentically true within you, the more naturally your unique gifts begin to shine.
This Week’s Invitation
The next time you hear yourself say, “I should…”, pause for just a moment.
Ask yourself:
Is this my truth, or am I living inside someone else’s expectations?
You don’t have to force an answer.
Simply become curious.
Awareness is often the first step toward living more authentically.
