Have you ever noticed how one small word can change the way something feels?
Lately, I’ve been paying attention to the connection between my thoughts, my feelings, my words, and my actions.
When they’re all pulling in different directions, I feel scattered.
When they begin working together, I feel more present.
One story has stayed with me for years.
Greg Braden once shared an experience of visiting a Native American elder during a time of drought.
After the ceremony, Greg asked if the elder had prayed for rain.
The elder simply replied,
“No. I prayed rain.”
I’ve thought about that one sentence many times.
Just one word.
Yet it completely changed the way I looked at prayer.
Sometimes we ask for something because we’re aware that it isn’t here yet.
Other times, we can allow ourselves to feel the peace, gratitude, or love we’re inviting into our lives.
The words may be similar.
The experience feels very different.
Recently, while hearing people pray for communities affected by wildfires, I found myself quietly wondering…
What would it feel like to hold the peace we hope for?
To imagine the fire contained.
To feel gratitude for the firefighters.
To picture families safe.
Not because we’re pretending everything is fine.
But because our attention gently shifts toward what we’re hoping to create.
I’ve noticed this isn’t only true in prayer.
It’s true in everyday life.
The words we choose influence what we notice.
And what we notice often shapes how we feel.
So today…
Pay attention to one small word.
Notice where your thoughts naturally go.
Notice what you’re feeling.
Then simply ask yourself,
“Am I focusing on what’s missing… or on what I’m inviting into my life?”
Sometimes one little word is enough to help us see things in a completely different way.
