Have you ever felt guilty because you didn’t meet someone’s expectations, especially when you didn’t even know those expectations existed?

That happened to me recently.

I was attending my nephew’s wedding when I ran into an old family friend I hadn’t seen in years. During our conversation, I realized that I had forgotten to invite this person to all three of my sons’ weddings.

It wasn’t intentional. I hadn’t made a conscious decision to leave them out. I simply hadn’t thought about it.

But the guilt that came over me was overwhelming.

I felt terrible.

And what made it even harder was knowing that I had never intended to hurt anyone.

When Guilt Takes Over

As I sat with what I was feeling, I realized how unkind I was being to myself over an honest mistake.

I couldn’t go back and change what had happened. But I could choose how I treated myself in that moment.

I needed to come back to my center and offer myself something I wasn’t giving myself.

Love.

Compassion.

Understanding.

I had forgotten an invitation. That didn’t mean I deserved to be unkind to myself.

And recognizing that made a difference.

Offering Ourselves a Little Compassion

Sometimes we carry guilt because we believe we’ve let someone down, even when we weren’t aware of what they expected from us.

My experience reminded me that I can acknowledge a mistake without continuing to punish myself for it.

I can care about someone else’s feelings and still offer myself compassion.

That isn’t always easy. Sometimes I need to find my center again and again.

But I’m discovering how much of a difference it makes when I choose to treat myself with love and understanding.

An Invitation for You

Have you ever felt guilty because you didn’t meet an expectation you didn’t even know existed?

What would it feel like to offer yourself a little compassion in that moment?

Perhaps there’s an experience in your life where you’ve been carrying guilt and being harder on yourself than you need to be.

I’m sharing this experience in the hope that it might offer you a different way of looking at your own.

You deserve love, compassion, and understanding, too.

Wishing you a beautiful week.

With love,

Sharon 💚
