Have you ever noticed that no matter how hard you try, perfect always seems just out of reach?
You finish something, and your attention immediately goes to what you wish you had done differently. You replay a conversation in your mind. You notice the one mistake instead of everything that went well.
It’s almost as if perfection keeps moving the finish line.
I remember watching my husband paint our home years ago. He has an incredible eye for detail. Friends and family would walk in and comment on how beautiful everything looked.
But all he could see were the tiny places that weren’t quite right.
I smiled because I realized…
I do that too.
Maybe you do as well.
Sometimes we’re so busy looking for what’s missing that we miss what’s already here.
That realization led me to a question I’ve never forgotten.
Am I really looking for perfection… or am I looking for peace?
The answer surprised me.
I wasn’t looking for perfection.
I was looking for peace.
Perfection promises that if we just do a little more, fix one more thing, or get everything exactly right, then we’ll finally be able to relax.
But it never seems to happen.
Peace doesn’t arrive because everything is perfect.
Peace begins when we stop believing it has to be.
Your worth has never depended on getting everything right.
It’s always been there, quietly waiting beneath the expectations, the self-criticism, and the pressure you’ve carried for so long.
Maybe that’s why trying to be perfect feels so exhausting.
We’re chasing something that was never meant to give us what we’re really searching for.
So this week, when you notice your inner critic pointing out another flaw…
Pause.
Take one slow breath.
Then ask yourself,
“Am I looking for perfection… or am I looking for peace?”
You might be surprised by the answer.
Because perfection has never been the goal.
Peace has.
And peace has always been much closer than you think.
